The Eclipse awards are based on a horse's body of work over an entire year, not the performance on a single day. Under your proposal a horse could (for example) have an undefeated season, winning several G1 stakes and suffer a minor injury that would preclude it from participating in the BC. Another horse without any G1 or even G2 victories could win the BC race and walk away with the Eclipse.
